A healthy society needs a left wing. But what happens when it goes insane?

Last Friday, I commented on the firing of the hateful racist Joy Reid from MSNBC and how pleased I was about it. But of course, Reid is only a symptom of a greater problem.

The modern day left in America has gone completely insane.

As a libertarian, I am very comfortable criticizing both the left and the right for their policy prescriptions. Both deviate away from freedom and towards statism along various semi-consistent dimensions while defending freedom along other dimensions.

From my political perspective, they both get things wrong, and in about the same “amount”.

That’s not the case these days. Somewhere recently (maybe 10-15 years ago?) the left went completely insane and made identitarianism based on immutable characteristics the most important part of their program. It has made them insane.

The right still has all its usual faults, although there is a recent swelling of anti-war sentiment on the right that I’m very pleased to see.

But the left has completely lost it. Surely you’ve seen plenty of examples yourself, so I’ll share just a couple that I saw recently:

Here’s a completely insane leftist lady on a NYC subway recently. This woman's mind has been poisoned by her news sources. She believes half the country are racist Nazis. She also believes it’s appropriate for her to attempt to physically assault a man for wearing a red hat supporting the current US president.

This is tragic. It's also a massive problem. How are these people to be "de-programmed"? I feel like we need a mass intervention to free these people from a literal death cult.

Here’s another example. It’s less violent, but somehow even creepier, a “hate note” left on a neighbor’s vehicle because it’s a Cybertruck. Not very “neighborly”, I’d say. More like behavior that is a harbinger of the complete breakdown of civilization.

Leftists have been programmed by their political leaders, and their “news” sources, and a horde of ranting, raving, and gibbering hate-filled loons on television that half the country are racist, misogynist literal Nazis and that it’s justifiable to treat them in any horrific manner they like, including murder.

I’m being literal and very serious. Here’s one more example.

This is a real problem. A healthy society has a well-functioning left wing and right wing. The purpose of the right wing is to support and defend the institutions that maintain the order and structure required for civilization.

The purpose of the left wing is to ensure that this structure doesn’t ossify into a system of stultified power and privilege such that the individual becomes oppressed.

We need both.

The perfect system (in my humble view) is a libertarian one. But even in such a system, there would be “left” and “right” elements.

The “gulf” between those elements would be much, much, smaller of course. One sign of how close our civilization is to destruction is the massive gulf between our current left and right.

It’s a problem.
