Cool story, bro! But how is this libertarian?
Feedback on the Hobo's shorty story A Game Of Roasts
Tomorrow we’ll be releasing the next episode of our show which is part one of our recap of the 2024 Libertarian Party National Convention.
For today, I wanted to respond to some of the amazing feedback I’ve received on my short story A Game Of Roasts. Most of you have really enjoyed it so far especially those of you who are fans the fantasy genre of fiction. But several of you have wondered what makes it a “libertarian” story. Great question. For me, I try to show rather than tell. What I mean is that instead of overtly preaching philosophy, I show a world in which people behave based on libertarian principles. For me, the essence of libertarianism - what it all really boils down to — is a preference by like-minded individuals to structure a society around the right of the freedom of association. Rather than browbeat readers with the philosophical meaning behind this with long boring speeches (ahem - John Galt called and wants his microphone back), the characters in my story simply act in way that is in accordance with that principle. In chapter one of the story, there is a point where the character named Stenoph questions the order of his military commander when he is ordered to stay behind while the commander taeks his granddaughters on a dangerous mission. Rather than punish him for objecting to the order, the commander simply reminds Stenoph that his granddaughters voluntarily joined the military force and signed contracts of service. However, because these contracts are voluntary, the are free to break the contracts for a penalty fee and are free to leave and live their lives as they see fit. So in this way, it subtlety demonstrates that this society respects the principle of the freedom of association at the core of its values.
Let me know if you think I’ve done a good job in showing libertarian values or if you think I’ve missed the mark. And if you haven’t checked out the story yet, click the link below. I’d love to hear your feedback and ideas on how to make it even more libertarian. Chapter two begins next week!
In liberty,
