As Jeremy Kauffman (the great sage and oracle of our time) famously put it, “War is gay.” He’s right of course, as he brilliantly demonstrated during his 2022 campaign to become a US senator from New Hampshire.
But Kauffman is also correct that we can (and should) strive to make it gayer.
At least, that’s the opinion of Sneha Nair, a nuclear policy expert appointed to the Department of Energy under the Biden administration.
Nair is a special assistant at something called the National Nuclear Security Administration. You’ve probably never heard of this organization, but apparently it is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of America’s nuclear arsenal (around 5,000 warheads).
Nair believes that one of the big problems with US nukes is they aren’t “queer” enough, and said so last year in an article titled “Queering nuclear weapons: How LGBTQ+ inclusion strengthens security and reshapes disarmament.”
This is a real article written by a real person employed by a real government and published in a real magazine called Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
Sweet. I feel safer already, now that I know that the people in charge of whether or not you and I are annihilated by nuclear fire are all over the important issues involved in this matter.
And who knows? Maybe Nair is right and the path to peace and safety is that we just haven’t “queered” our nukes quite enough. It’s a perfectly fitting hypothesis for our modern age. And how can we know until we try?
Unfortunately, Jeremy Kauffman was unsuccessful in his senatorial bid, but I hope Kauffman and Nair don’t give up on their efforts. Please, for all our sakes, make war gay again — and queer too, for that matter!
After all, all our lives are at stake.
Naturally,
Adam

Existence itself is war.
