In some ways, the Haman Nature show (and this here Substack) doesn’t have all that much to do with the magnificent gambling game of poker. Poker was and is a huge part of my life, and I’m selling poker coaching services (and writing a book about poker), so naturally I talk about it some.
But Haman Nature is really about our nature as human beings and our place in this universe. Tyrone and I talk about culture and politics, doing so through a lens of economics, philosophy, history, and as much as we can divine about evolutionary biology/psychology.
There’s not all that much room for poker in there — except, of course, for all the zillions of ways poker can teach you about life. I’ll explain much more about that in my upcoming book.
But in another way, all my various podcasting activities stemmed directly from poker. Here’s why: My very first podcast appearance (from all the way back in 2016!) was on the Tom Woods Show, episode 764.
The Hamans joined Tom Woods and Bob Murphy on their inaugural voyage of the Contra Cruise — so named because of Tom and Bob’s Contra Krugman podcast. On the ship, Tom became very interested in my tales of poker and government and how the latter ruined the former in the early 2000s, so he had me on his show.
I’m biased, of course, but I think it’s a pretty great interview!
Years later, Bob Murphy invited me on his Bob Murphy show to ask me some poker-related questions involving the Robert Redford movie Havana.
In the interim, I joined the Libertarian Party of Nevada and helped relaunch their podcast. That effort only had enough steam for a couple of seasons, but there are some very interesting topics and interview in there for “hardcore” Haman Nature fans!
And then, of course, came my current efforts, the Natural Order Podcast with my friend Brian D. O’Leary and Haman Nature with our favorite porcupine hobo, Tyrone.
It’s been a fun journey so far, and it’s only getting started! I was recently interviewed on the Knuckleheads of Liberty podcast and the Vacuous Vocations podcast, and I anticipate many such guest spot appearances going forward.
So, I may be a writer and a podcaster/YouTuber now, but it all started with poker. The game is in my blood. If you love it too, and you want my help improving your game, consider hiring my coaching services. It ain’t cheap, but I think you’ll find it’s worth it.
Naturally,
Adam
Your remarks to Tom Woods about poker players not being much more libertarian than the rest of the population matches what I found as an indie musician. I thought indie musicians would be independent-minded people. Nope. Indie musicians are largely normies who are simply marginally better than the average person at playing a musical instrument.
I love the new term Tyrone came up with for fans of the show: Hamaniacs.
