I'm not sure life as defined within the natural world is *essential*, since as far as we human life forms can tell, life doesn't exist everywhere in the universe and wasn't always present in the one place we're sure it exists (Earth).

Yeah. "Essential" is a bit of a weasel-word. Fair point.
